一、Explain-the-fllowing-terms
1. Category
Category refers to a group of linguistic items which fulfill the same or similar functions in 【答案】
a particular language such as a sentence, a noun phrase or a verb.
2. Concordance
【答案】 The computer has the ability to search for a particular word , sequence of words , or perhaps even a part of speech in a text. The computer can also retrieve all examples of a particular word. It can also calculate the number of occurrences of a certain word so that information on the frequency of the word may be gathered. We may also be interested in sorting the data in some way—for example, alphabetically on words occurring in the immediate context of the word. This is usually referred to as concordance.
3. Subordinate construction
【答案】 Subordinate constructions are one of the two subtypes of endocentric constructions. Those in which there is only one head , with the head being dominant and the other constituents dependent , are subordinate constructions.
4. Pidgins and Creoles
【答案】 A pidgin refers to a variety of a language that is not native language of anyone, but is learned on contact situations such as trading. When a pidgin develops beyond its role as a trade language and becomes the first language of a social community , it becomes a creole. The process by which a pidgin becomes a creole is called creolization.
5. Transformational-Generative grammar
【答案】 Transformational-generative grammar is proposed by Noam Chomsky. He postulated a syntactic base of language (called deep structure ) , which consists of a series of phrase-structure rewrite rules, i.e., a series of (possibly universal) rules that generates the underlying phrase-structure of a sentence. The end result of a transformational-generative grammar is a surface structure that is identical to an actual sentence of a language , after the mediating of a series of rules (called transformations ) that act upon the deep structures.
6. CALL
【答案】 It is the abbreviation of computer-assisted language learning, which refers to the use of a computer in the teaching or learning of a second or foreign language. In this kind of CALL programs,
the computer leads the student through a learning task step-by-step , asking question to check comprehension. Depending on the student^ response, the computer gives the student further practice or progresses to new material.
7. Stem
A stem is a morpheme or combination of morphemes to which an inflectional affix can be 【答案】
added. For example, “friend-” in friends, and “friendship-” in friendships are both stems. The former shows that a stem can be equivalent to a root, whereas the latter shows that a stem may contain a root and a derivational affix.
8. Locutionary Act, Illocutinary Act and Perlocutionary Act
【答案】 According to Austin , a speaker might be performing three acts simultaneously when speaking.
A locutionary act is the uttering of words, phrases, and clauses, which conveys meaning by giving out meaningful sounds. Therefore, when somebody says „„Morning‟‟,we can ask a question like “What did he do?‟‟,and the answer could be “He offered a greeting.”
An illocutionary act is the act of expressing the speaker‟s intention; it is the act performed in saying something. Therefore, for the same example,we can say “He meant it as a greeting”.
A perlocutionary act is the effect of the utterance. Thus,by saying “Morning!” the speaker has made it clear that he wants to keep friendly relations with the hearer.
9. Design features
【答案】 Design features : It refer to the defining properties of human language that tell the difference between human language and any system of animal communication.
10.Assimilation
【答案】 It is a process by which one sound takes on some or all the characteristics of a neighboring sound. It is often used synonymously with coarticulation. Nasalization, dentalization and,velarization are all instances of assimilation. There are two possibilities of assimilation: if a following sound is influencing a preceding sound, it is regressive assimilation;
the converse process, in which a preceding sound is influencing a following sound, is known as progressive assimilation. For example, in “mink”,“n”,which is originally pronounced aswill be velarized by the following “k”/k/,and therefore the word will be pronounced as
二、Short-answer-questions
11.What is the relationship between tree diagrams and structural ambiguity?
【答案】 In a theory of syntax using tree diagrams (phrase markers ) to represent syntactic structure , the explanation of the phenomenon of structural ambiguity is straightforward : whereas an unambiguous sentence is associated with just one basic tree diagram, a structurally ambiguous sentence is associated with more than one basic tree diagram.
12.What are the three important points of the Prague School?
【答案】 The Prague School has three points of special importance , First , it stressed that the
synchronic study of language is fully justified as it can draw on complete and controllable material for investigation. Second, it emphasised the systemic character of language, arguing that no element of any language can be satisfactorily analysed or evaluated if viewed in isolation. In other words, elements are held to be in functional contrast or opposition. Third , it looked on language as a tool performing a number of essential functions or tasks for the community using it.
13.How to analyze dramatic language?
【答案】(1) Turn quantity and length
How much a character talks can be indicative either of their relative importance in the play, or of how important they appear to think they are. Generally speaking , central characters have longer and more speeches than minor characters.
(2)Exchange sequence: The patterns of exchange of a dramatic dialogue which are considered appropriate by speakers of English. For example , the two-part exchanges such as greeting-greeting , question-answer.
(3)Production errors: Deliberately used forms such as hesitation to convey something about the character
(4)The cooperative principle : this principle is proposed by Grice. He asserted people used to make sense of their conversation by enabling them to distinguish between sentence meaning and utterance meaning. He also suggested that people actually break these maxims quite often when they talk.
(5)Status marked through language: Many of the properties of language discussed can be used to signal the relative status and changes in status , of characters. Particularly , language can be used to signal to what extent the relationship between an addresser and addressee is based on a social power difference , and to what extent it is based on solidarity.
(6)Register : It is the term used in linguistics to describe the relationship between a particular style of language and its context of use. An example of a linguistic register is legal discourse, we recognize a legal document when we see one, but lawyers are the only people who are trained to produce them using appropriate linguistic choices.
(7)Speech and silence: Concerning female characters in plays, there is evidence that men tend to talk more than women in mixed sex conversations.
14.How would you describe this short exchange in terms of the ardors performed by the speakers?
Motorist : My car needs new exhaust system.
Mechanic : Fll be busy with this other car all day.
【答案】 In the motorist‟s utterance ,there are two types of speech acts performed , namely representative and directive, and as to the latter one, it is recognized as an indirect speech act, which is performed through the performance of the former one. Thus, by stating that his car needs new exhaust system , the motorist has in fact asked the mechanic to equip a new exhaust system for him.
Similarly ,in the mechanic‟s utterance , there are two types of speech acts performed ; one is representative , the other commissive. The commissive speech act in fact is an indirect one since it is recognized through the performance of representative action. That is to say, by stating that he will be busy with another car all day, the mechanic has in fact told the motorist that he could not repair his car right away.
