● 摘要
一、Explain-the-fllowing-terms
1. Construal and construal operations
【答案】Construal is the competence to conceive and portray the same situation in alternate ways through specificity, different mental scanning, directionality, vantage point, figure-ground segregation etc. Construal operations are conceptualizing processes applied in language process by human beings. That is, construal operations are the underlying psychological processes and resources employed in the interpretation of linguistic expressions.
2. Cognition
【答案】 Cognition is, in psychology, used to refer to the mental processes of an individual, with particular relation to a concept which argues that the mind has internal mental states (such as beliefs, desires and intentions ) and can be understood as information processing , especially when much abstraction or concretization is involved , or processes such as involving knowledge , expertise or learning for example are at work. Another definition of “cognition” is the mental process or faculty of knowing , including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment.
3. computational linguistics
【答案】 Computational linguistics is a branch of applied linguistics , dealing with computer processing of human language, h includes programmed instruction, speech synthesis and recognition, automatic translation, and computer mediated communication.
4. Bound morpheme
【答案】 Bound morphemes refer to those morphemes that can not occur alone and must appear with at least another morpheme. For example , in the word “careless”,“-less” is a bound morpheme since it could not occur by itself as a word.
5. Embedding
【答案】 It refers to the inclusion of a clause within a phrase or another clause, or of a phrase into another phrase. An example of embedded clauses is: What I do is none of your business. (Nominal clause embedded as subject of another clause)
6. constituent
【答案】 Constituent is a term used in structural sentence analysis for every linguistic unit, which is a part of a larger linguistic unit. Several constituents together form a construction: for example, in the sentence The boy ate the apple, S , the boy , ate the apple , each part is a constituent. (A )(B )(C )
Constituents can be joined together with other constituents to form larger units. If two constituents, in the case of the example above , B (the boy ) and C ( ate the apple ) , are joined to form a
hierarchically higher constituent A (“S”,here a sentence) , then B and C are said to be immediate constituents of A.
7. Lingua franca
【答案】 It is language that is used for communication between different groups of people, each speaking a different language , lhe lingua franca could be an internationally used language of communication (e. g. English) , it could be the native language of one of the groups, or it could a language which is not spoken natively by any of the groups but has a simplified sentence structure and vocabulary and is often a mixture of two or more languages.
8. basic level category
【答案】 Basic level category is the most economical level at which you can find the most relevant information. The information on our interactions with objects in the real world are stored at this level. It is at this level that we conjure up the general gestalt of the category.
二、Essay-question
9. Research has found that two-year-old English children produce negative sentences such as a) tod ) , but note):
a )He doesn’t like cabbage.
b )Doesn’t like cabbage.
c )Him no like cabbage.
d )No like cabbage.
e )*Him doesn’t like cabbage.
How can you account for this?
【答案】 This founding firstly demonstrates one point that the acquisition of auxiliary verbs comes later than that of comparatively “simpler” morphemes such as pronouns. Therefore, it is unUkely for children to make mistakes as shown in e) . The reason for this phenomenon could be explained by the fact that in the early stage of children^ language acquisition, the speech at first only contains content words and lacks the function elements.
This founding also shows that children have a certain process of learning the negative form. There are generally three stages.
1) At first, the negative element is not part of the structure of the sentences. It is simply attached to the beginning, as shown in d).
2 ) The negative element is inserted into the sentence. The additional negative forms don't and can't are used, and with no and not, begin to be placed in front of the verb rather than at the beginning, as shown in c ).
3) Children begin to produce the appropriate part of do, be or the model verbs, to suit the person or tense, as shown in b) and a).
10.Explain this statement and give at least two examples of it: “In studying other cultures,we do so from the perspective of our own culture.”
【答案】 Culture is a semiotic meaning system in which symbols function to communicate meaning from one mind to another. It is related to language in such a way that language is a part of culture and a part of human behavior, and also the primary medium for transmitting much of culture. Therefore , without language, culture would not be possible. Consequently, when studying a culture, we often rely on the language. Therefore, we may use our own language to describe the target culture, which may be the one interpretation of the statement 6tIn studying other cultures, we do so from the perspective of our own culture”.
What s more , when studying other cultures , we will definitely come across the differences between the target culture and our own culture. We will subconsciously compare the two different cultures. Seeing from the perspective of our own culture, we find how the target culture is different from our own culture, and this makes the target culture more distinctive from our own.
11.What are the major types of semantic Changes?
There are mainly three kinds of semantic changes, namely, broadening, narrowing, and 【答案】
meaning shift. Class shift and folk etymology also contribute to change in meaning.
(1)Broadening
Broadening is a process to extend or elevate the meaning from its originally specific sense to a relatively general one. For instance , the word holiday used to mean“holy day’’in religious English. Today it means“a day for rest’’regardless of its religious nature.
(2)Narrowing
Contrary to broadening, the original meaning of a word can be narrowed or restricted to a specific sense. A typical example is the word meat which originally meant “ food”. In the course of time, the range of meaning was narrowed to mean specifically “ the flesh of animals used as food”.
(3 ) Meaning shift
All semantic changes involve meaning shift. Yet, in its narrow sense, meaning shift refers to the change of meaning, which has nothing to do with generalization or restriction. What makes the meaning of a word different is its departure from its original domain as a result of its metaphorical usage. For instance , the word bead originally means “prayer”, but later it refers to “the prayer bead”, the visible manifestation of a prayer, finally “small, ball-shaped piece of glass, metal or wood”.
(4)Class shift
By shifting the word class one can change the meaning of a word from a concrete entity or notion to a process or attribution. This process of word formation is also known as zero-derivation, or conversion. The word engineer as a noun means “a person trained in a branch of engineering”,but it means “to act as an engineer” or “to plan, to maneuver” when used as a verb.
(5)Folk etymology
It refers to a change in form of a word or phrase resulting from an incorrect popular notion of the origin or meaning of the term or from the influence of more familiar terms mistakenly taken to be analogous. As a result of this modification, the word sparrowgrass in English derived from asparagus; the Spanish cucaracha changed into English cockroach.
12.Illustrate “Immediate Constituent Analysis”.
The relation between a sentence and its component elements is generally referred to as the 【答案】
relation between a construction and its constituents , in which a very important notion is immediate
