一、Explain-the-fllowing-terms
1. Predication analysis
【答案】 Predication analysis is an important step in the analysis of sentential meaning. The predication is the common category shared by propositions, questions, commands, etc. Such analysis is to break down the sentence into its smaller constituents: argument and predicate. The predicate is the major or pivotal element governing the argument. The argument is the logical participant.
2. Arbitrariness
【答案】 Arbitrariness : Arbitrariness refers to the fact that the forms of linguistic signs have no natural relationship to their meaning. Arbitrariness of language makes it potentially creative , a conventionality of language makes a language be passed from generation to generation. For example, it is unable to explain why a book is called a /buk/ and a pen a /pen/.
3. Displacement
Language can be used to refer to what is present, what is absent, what happens at present, 【答案】
what happened in the past, what will happen in the future or what happens in a far-away place. This property of language enables language users to overcome the barriers caused by time and place. For example , we can talk about Sapir, who is already dead; we can even talk about next week, which is in the future.
4. Homonymy
【答案】 In any language there are words which have the same linguistic form but are different in meaning. These words are called homonyms. For example, bank (of a river) , and bank (financial institution ).
5. grammatical word
【答案】 It refers to those which mainly work for constructing group , phrase , clause , clause complex , or even text , such as , conjunctions , prepositions , articles , and pronouns. Grammatical words serve to link together different content parts. So they are also known as Function Words.
6. Subordinate construction
【答案】 Subordinate constructions are one of the two subtypes of endocentric constructions. Those in which there is only one head , with the head being dominant and the other constituents dependent , are subordinate constructions.
7. constituent
【答案】 Constituent is a term used in structural sentence analysis for every linguistic unit, which is a part of a larger linguistic unit. Several constituents together form a construction: for example, in the sentence The boy ate the apple, S , the boy , ate the apple , each part is a constituent. (A )(B )(C )
Constituents can be joined together with other constituents to form larger units. If two constituents, in the case of the example above , B (the boy ) and C ( ate the apple ) , are joined to form a hierarchically higher constituent A (“S”,here a sentence) , then B and C are said to be immediate constituents of A.
8. Foregrounding
【答案】 This term is meant for what is unusual, attractive, unconventional, salient. In literature, foregrounding is often achieved through unconventional expressions which attract the readers9 attention. The main manifestations of foregrounding are deviation and parallelism.
9. The London School of Linguistics
【答案】 The London School generally refers to the kind of linguistic scholarship in England. The man who turned linguistics proper into a recognized distinct academic subject in Britain was J.R. Firth.
10.Compound
【答案】 Compound refers to those words that consist of more than one lexical morpheme, or the way to join two separate words to produce a single form, such as the compound words “blackboard” and “well-known”.

15.Why is Saussure hailed as the father of modem linguistics?
【答案】 Saussure occupies such an important place in the history of linguistics that he is often described as ''father of modem linguistics”:
A. The book Course in General Linguistics (1916),which is the most important source of Saussure‟s ideas, marked the beginning of modem linguistics.
B.Saussure was the first to notice the complexities of language. He believed that language is a system of signs, called conventions. He held that the sign is the union of the signifier and the signified.
C.By providing answers to questions concerning many aspects of language, Saussure made clear the object of study for linguistics as a science. His ideas on the arbitrary nature of sign, on the relational nature of linguistic units , on the distinction of langue and parole and of synchronic and diachronic linguistics , etc. pushed linguistics into a brand new stage.
16.Illustrate the relationship between morpheme and allomorph by examples.
【答案】 Morpheme is the smallest meaningful linguistic unit of language , not divisible or analyzable into smaller forms. What is usually considered a single word in English may be composed of one or more morphemes. Take disagreeable for example, it contains three morphemes, dis-, agree and -able. A morpheme may take various shapes or forms. For instance, -ion, -tion, -sion and -ation are the positional variants of the same suffix. They do not differ in meaning or function but show a slight difference in sound depending on the final phoneme of the preceding verb. They are called allomorphs. So an allomorph is any of the variant forms of a morpheme as conditioned by position or adjoining sounds.

17.Discuss the following advertisement extensively: “ 你不理财,财不理你”.
【答案】 This advertisement is an interesting one, for its witty use of pun words. There are two places of punning. First , “理财” could be interpreted in two different ways : one is “to manage one‟s money‟‟,the other is “not to ignore money”. Second, in the second part of the sentence, “财 ” is punned through homophony: it could be interpreted as “财 ”,therefore , the whole part “财不理你” could mean “fortune will ignore you‟‟,or rather,“fortune will pass you away”. This character could also interpreted as “才”,therefore , the whole part “财不理你” could mean “I will ignore you”,or rather, “I will show you my cold shoulder” (Here UF, refers to the company which put out this advertisement).
Therefore , this utterance could be possibly interpreted in the following ways. 1) If you do not
