一、Explain-the-fllowing-terms
1. Cognition
【答案】 Cognition is, in psychology, used to refer to the mental processes of an individual, with particular relation to a concept which argues that the mind has internal mental states (such as beliefs, desires and intentions ) and can be understood as information processing , especially when much abstraction or concretization is involved , or processes such as involving knowledge , expertise or learning for example are at work. Another definition of “cognition” is the mental process or faculty of knowing , including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment.
2. Arbitrariness
【答案】 Arbitrariness : Arbitrariness refers to the fact that the forms of linguistic signs have no natural relationship to their meaning. Arbitrariness of language makes it potentially creative , a conventionality of language makes a language be passed from generation to generation. For example, it is unable to explain why a book is called a /buk/ and a pen a /pen/.
3. Polysemy
【答案】 Polysemy means a single word having several or many meanings. According to Crystal: Polysemy is a term used in semantic analysis to refer to a lexical item which has a range of different meanings. Polysemic words are signs of an advanced culture. Polysemy is also an essential feature of a language‟s economy and efficiency.
4. functional morpheme
【答案】 This is a subtype of free morphemes, which one consists largely of the functional words in language such as conjunctions, prepositions, articles and pronouns, for example, “and, about when on , near, the” an so on.
5. Locutionary Act, Illocutinary Act and Perlocutionary Act
【答案】 According to Austin , a speaker might be performing three acts simultaneously when speaking.
A locutionary act is the uttering of words, phrases, and clauses, which conveys meaning by giving out meaningful sounds. Therefore, when somebody says „„Morning‟‟,we can ask a question like “What did he do?‟‟,and the answer could be “He offered a greeting.”
An illocutionary act is the act of expressing the speaker‟s intention; it is the act performed in saying something. Therefore, for the same example,we can say “He meant it as a greeting”.
A perlocutionary act is the effect of the utterance. Thus,by saying “Morning!” the speaker has made it clear that he wants to keep friendly relations with the hearer.
二、Short-answer-questions
6. What is reference?
Reference means what a linguistic form refers to in the real, physical world; it deals with 【答案】
the relationship between linguistic elements and non-linguistic world of experience.
Reference in its wider sense would be the relationship between a word or phrase and an entity in the external world. For example, the word tree refers to the object “tree”.
Reference in its narrower sense is the relationship between a word or phrase and a specific object, e.g. a particular tree or a particular animal. For example, Peter's horse would refer to a horse which is owned , ridden by, or in some way associated with Peter.
7. Why do people take duality as one of the important design features of human language? Can you tell us what language will be if it has no such design feature?
【答案】 Duality makes our language productive. A large number of different units can be formed out of a small number of elements——for instance, tens of thousands of words out of a small set of sounds. And out of the huge number of words, there can be astronomical number of possible sentences and phrases, which in turn can combine to form unlimited number of texts. Most animal communication systems do not have this design feature of human language.
If language had no such design feature , then it would be like animal communicational system which consists of only a number of basic sounds and this would be highly limited. Then we would not be able to produce a very large number of sound combinations (e.g. words ) , which are distinct in meaning. In other words, the number of messages one can send would be restricted to the number of basic sounds.
8. Please disambiguate the following 5 sentences, using the tree-diagram, or any other means that you think is appropriate.
(1)Jane showed her baby pictures.
(2)The old man is drinking in the air.
(3)We need more realistic officials to handle the economy.
(4)We are sweeping the ground cigarettes on the street.
(5)Tom exchanged the money and fell around the corner.
【答案】(1)
9. How to distinguish root and stem?
【答案】 Root is that part of a word-form that remains when all the inflectional and derivational affixes have been removed. Thus in the word undesirables , the root is desire. Stem is the part of a word-form that remains when all inflectional affixes have been removed. So in the word undesirables, the stem is undesirable. The stem of a word may be: a) a simple stem consisting of only one morpheme or root , e.g. work ; b ) a root plus a derivational affix , e.g. worker ; c ) two or more roots , e.g. workshop.
