The second applicant has the better chance of being accepted on the course. In the sentence responding to the first applicant, we can infer that the intended meaning of the director is “we think your English level is not high enough to meet this course’ demands, thus we are not sure about your English learning ability in our course.” It is likely that the director will not accept this student’s application. In the second sentence, the intended meaning of the director is that “we think your English level can meet our course’ demands, but anyhow, we have to consult your referees for additional information, if it goes on well, we will accept you.” The one who has high English ability is primary for course application and will have more chances of being accepted. From these two intended meaning, it is likely that the director of English language department will accept the second applicant.

4.Analyse and explain (8%)

Halliday proposes a very important idea in this paragraph, that is both the spoken language and written language are complex in nature but only in different ways of expression. Because both the spoken language and written language are the reflection of the world, thus they are the same in their complexity. However, because of the different purpose of use, the organizations of the two forms of expressions are different. From the examples we can see that when expressing the same idea, the written language will use less words than the corresponding spoken language. Also there are some changes of words’ class involved. For example, in the first sentence example, the subject is a noun “investment”, which sounds very objective; while in the corresponding spoken language, it is transformed into a “verb”.
